ABSTRACT

Welding operations are widely present in the manufacturing production process, involving a large number of occupational groups, and are the key occupations where work injuries and occupational diseases occur in China. For different welding processes and welding materials, the content and focus of occupational health monitoring are different. At present, the item of occupational health examination in welding operation is in poor consistency with the on-site exposure of occupational hazard factors, and it is mainly concentrated in the stage of disease development, which can not reflect the early health damage caused by welding dust exposure in time. The emergence of biomarkers of welding dust can make up for this defect. Therefore, it is of great significance to describe the current situation of occupational health monitoring of welding dust and summarize the research progress of related biomarkers for the early prevention of diseases caused by welding dust and the practice of occupational health monitoring.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT INTRODUCTION: Smartphone and application use can improve communication and monitoring of chronic diseases, including chronic kidney disease, through self-management and increased adherence to treatment. OBJECTIVE: To assess smartphone use in patients with chronic kidney disease on dialysis and their willingness to use mobile applications as a disease self-management strategy. DESIGN AND SETTING: This was a cross-sectional study of chronic kidney disease patients on hemodialysis in the São Francisco Valley in the Northeast Region, Brazil. METHODS: The questionnaire developed by the authors was administered between April and June 2021. Cronbach's alpha coefficient for the construct was 0.69. Associations between the dependent and independent variables were determined using univariate analysis. Multivariate analysis with logistic regression analysis was also performed. RESULTS: A total of 381 patients were included, of whom 64% had a smartphone, although only 3.1% knew of a kidney disease-related application. However, 59.3% believed that using an application could help them manage their disease. Having a smartphone was associated with treatment adherence, higher educational attainment, and higher per capita income. Educational attainment remained an independent factor in multivariate analysis. CONCLUSION: More than 64% of patients had a smartphone, although few knew of applications developed for kidney disease. More than half of the population believed that technology use could benefit chronic kidney disease treatment. Smartphone ownership was more common among the younger population, with higher educational attainment and income, and was associated with greater adherence to hemodialysis sessions.

ABSTRACT

Abstract This article has two integrated objectives: (i) to identify the representation of health in the 2030 Agenda from health-related indicators implemented by international and national institutions; and (ii) to compare the potential of platforms for monitoring Brazilian health commitments in the SDGs. It is argued that there are still important controversies brought about by the greater complexity of the 2030 Agenda, particularly in the operationalization of health-related indicators, whose determinants permeate many other objectives and goals. Finally, even though the picture of the country currently available on national and international platforms is already broad, improvements are required for more effective monitoring and evaluation of Brazilian commitments in the SDGs, with greater disaggregation and stratification of indicators in the population.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the distribution characteristics of surveillance results of key occupational diseases in Nanning City.METHODS: The occupational health monitoring data of key occupational diseases of Nanning City from 2015 to 2019 were collected using judgment sampling method and analyzed by descriptive epidemiology method. RESULTS: A total of 38 cases of key occupational diseases were reported in Nanning City during the past 5 years. The main diseases were occupational pneumoconiosis and occupational noise-induced deafness(ONID). The rate of occupational health examination was 40.06%, showing an increasing trend with the increase of years(P<0.01). The detection rate of occupational pneumoconiosis was higher than that of ONID(0.19% vs 0.01%, P<0.01). However, the abnormal detection rate of occupational health special examination in noise-exposed workers was higher than that in dust-exposed workers(10.98% vs 0.35%, P<0.01). The detection rate of pneumoconiosis-like changes in dust-exposed workers was the highest in private enterprises(P<0.01). The detection rate of binaural high frequency average hearing threshold ≥40 dB was highest in small and micro enterprises and private enterprises(all P<0.01). The detection rate of blood lead level >400 μg/L was 24.75%, and 98.80% of the abnormal workers were concentrated in medium-sized foreign-funded enterprises. The detection rates of abnormal leukocyte, neutrophil and platelet counts in benzene-exposed workers were 1.17%, 3.21% and 0.26% respectively. CONCLUSION: Among the key occupational disease risk factors in Nanning City, the number of workers exposed to dust and noise is relatively high, which results in serious consequences and harm. But the hazards of lead and benzene cannot be ignored. Emphasis should be placed on strengthening the supervision and management of key occupational diseases in small and medium-sized micro-enterprises and private enterprises.

ABSTRACT

A wearable wireless health monitoring system for drug addicts in compulsory rehabilitation centers was proposed. The system can continuously monitor multiple physiological parameters of drug addicts in real time, and issue early warning information when abnormal physiological parameters occur, so as to play the role of timely medical practice. In addition, this study proposes a convolutional neural network (CNN)model, which can evaluate the health status of drug addicts based on multiple physiological parameters. Experiments show that the model can be applied to the task of body state recognition in the open physiological parameter data set, and the recognition accuracy can reach up to 100% in a single physiological parameter data set; when the whole physiological data set is used, the recognition accuracy can reach 99.1%. The recognition accuracy exceeds the performance of the traditional pattern recognition method on this task, which verifies the superiority of the model.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: Acceleration plethysmograms (APGs) are obtained by taking the second derivative of photoplethysmograms (PPGs) and are noninvasive circulatory signals related to risk factors for atherosclerosis with age. There has been growing interest in the development of mobile devices to collect and analyze PPG single features for ambulatory health monitoring. The present study aimed to extract a new feature from the morphologies of APG and PPG signals to classify the dominant indices related to the pulsatile volume of blood in tissue according to age. METHODS: Ten APG and 14 PPG indices were simultaneously extracted. All indices were compared via Pearson correlation coefficients (r) and a regression analysis. We introduced a combined index extracted from both the PPG and APG indices defined as the inflection point area plus the d_peak (IPAD). The participants included 93 healthy adults aged 36–86 years with a mean ± standard deviation age of 57.43 ± 11.99 years. RESULTS: The d_peak and age index for the APG indices were significantly correlated with age (r = −0.408, p < 0.0001 and r = 0.296, p = 0.0039, respectively). Only the A1 time for PPG indices was moderately correlated with age (r = −0.247, p = 0.017). The stiffness index, including individual height information, was not related to age (r = −0.031, p = 0.7713). However, the combined IPAD index was significantly more correlated with age (r = 0.56, p < 0.001) than the other indices. CONCLUSIONS: The proposed index outperformed the other 24 indices for evaluating vascular aging. We suggest that the IPAD is a significant factor related to the clinical information embedded in the PPG waveform.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Health surveillance is an essential public health function in which different actors must participate. The current legislation for Costa Rica defines the work of some of these actors but not that of others, as in the case of pharmacy. Objective: To describe aspects related to the actions of pharmacy specialists in the process of health surveillance in the Costa Rican context. Methods: Qualitative research conducted from August to October 2014. Twenty two health areas were visited in urban areas and 5 in rural settings; key informants were voluntarily and confidentially interviewed, that is, 22 from pharmacies, 2 from medical centers, one from the nursing area, one from psychology service and one from social work are. All of them were members of local epidemiological surveillance commissions. Results: The actions of the pharmacy specialists are primarily focused on specific traditional tasks performed in a pharmaceutical center, and related to drug management. Lower number of actions is carried out to extend them to the population setting, since this role is limited due to administrative difficulties and requirements. Conclusions: Pharmacy specialists have potentialities and opportunities for health surveillance, which they partially carry out, but their role continues to be focused on medicines, without going farther into other settings within the primary health care. Other types of activities that might attain better wellbeing in several populations are also lacking(AU)

ABSTRACT

The term“specific pathogen free” ( SPF) implies the bioexclusion of a defined list of organisms that can cause disease in a host.Due to many different factors including animal source, vivarium layout, microbiological history, engineering standards, operation practice, and experimental needs, the bioexclusion list tends to be specific for many institutions using live animals in biomedical research. As such, the design and implementation of institution-specific health monitoring program can also vary based on needs.By comparison, laboratory animal producers and users in China are subject to GB regulations which have established a national bioexclusion list based on animal health categories, as well as set detailed engineering standards for vivarium operations based on specific animal health profiles. In addition to summarizing the SPF list of major rodent vendors in North America, the purpose of this article is to bring attention to the different factors animal users should take into consideration when evaluating one ’ s own bioexclusion list and designing institution-specific health monitoring program for laboratory mice and rats, in order to assure animal colony health and scientific integrity.
